When, instead of passively watching a film, we pick up a joystick and ourselves get rid of the problems of good and evil heroes, all sorts of nonsense invariably turns out. Video inserts “reveal the plot” and distract from the game, scripted scenes take away control at the wrong time, repeated lines of actors drive you crazy. Fortunately, the developers of Space Chimps didn’t care about the British cartoon of the same name, they were just making a high-quality arcade game.

The essence of the game fully justifies the age rating of "3+". Having taken control of one of the two chimpanzees, we must guide him (or her) to the end of the level without falling into the abyss or ruining the skin from piercing and cutting objects. It must be said that these monkeys are certified graduates of the American cosmonaut school, which, as you know, will not accept anyone. Accordingly, both have increased survival skills. Hairy guy Tom can deftly jump on poles and bars, run on walls and knows Kung Fu (monkey technique, obviously). The girl Luna takes advantage of her intellect: she sends Tom instead of herself on the most dangerous missions. She also holds a lizard in her hand, whose spit breaks multi-ton columns, and in her backpack – an overgrown butterfly, which gives the astronaut the ability to fly.

Both characters take turns. If you don’t have time to jump further, you’ll have to start the ride all over again. The game will take away some health from the monkey and force you to replay the failed moment. But if your health comes to an end, you will have to go through a much larger part of the mission again. However, there are plenty of medicinal bananas in the locations. Tom’s jumping levels were made with all the money, the spinal cord from them is in seventh heaven. Combined with the active distribution of punches to alien mutants, the result is excellent entertainment. But the Moon missions are much less exciting. In theory, they are built on logical riddles. Where can I get a heavier stone to press the button on the ground with?? Where to go for the blue key: up or to the right? Levers, activators, winches are stocked in abundance, but they are arranged so simply that any problem can be solved instantly, you just have to count the surrounding objects. The only problem that causes difficulties is the unruly camera, which sometimes occupies a position to the right of the Moon, making it difficult to see the level and causing nostalgia for the eight-bit arcades of the nineties.

Not only the virtual operator, but also the simple design reminds of the latter. Features of the landscape are indicated symbolically: we jump on the leaves – that means we are in the jungle, our path is crossed by rivers of lava – this means a stone monster is carried into the womb. Giant ratchets and gear shafts decorate the evil lair of Zartrog, the culprit of all monkey misfortunes. Which architect came up with the idea to build all these structures, and how anyone manages to live peacefully among them, I definitely don’t recommend thinking about it. Because it’s pointless: the game is childish and doesn’t pretend to be thoughtful. Being by and large technologically backward, Space Chimps, oddly enough, sometimes produces a good picture. Regular changes of scenery keep you from getting bored, good physics adds drama to the characters’ acrobatic performances, and HDR lighting masks muddy textures. However, there is no need to talk about good design work: the locations are sparsely furnished, the models of surrounding objects are made very crudely, and the opponents, due to their crooked appearance and poisonously bright colors, look out of place in absolutely any setting and against any background.

To correct the balance between the pros and cons in the right direction, the developers crammed everything that was at hand into the game. Among the worthwhile highlights are the unobtrusive soundtrack and video inserts from the cartoon on which the project is based. Parts of the video are intended to add some kind of plot to Space Chimps, although this game needs it like a fifth wheel to a cart. By collecting multi-colored balls and bananas covered with advertisements at levels, you can unlock some more bonuses: interchangeable costumes for heroes, several missions for two players, as well as concept art and movies. However, you can immediately forget about their existence: you won’t lose anything.

Space Chimps does not surprise with its beauty and originality, it does not occupy your mind with a variety of puzzles or a well-thought-out plot. This is a short and stupid game. But thanks to its dynamism and variety, it will surely appeal to children and can serve as an evening’s relaxation for adults.
